Canada’s NDP Launches Federal Leadership Race
OTTAWA – Today, Canada’s New Democratic Party officially launched its Federal Leadership Race, starting a new chapter for the Party and its members across the country.
“This leadership race is an exciting opportunity for our members and for people across the country who share progressive values," said President Mary Shortall. "It will spark important conversations about the kind of future we want to build together, rooted in fairness, justice, and hope. I know our members are eager to take part in a contest that is democratic, inclusive, and inspiring for the entire movement.”
Application packages for prospective leadership candidates were made available on August 20. Since then, there has already been strong interest, reflecting members’ enthusiasm for a dynamic and engaging race that will shape the future of the NDP.
As part of the launch, the Party also unveiled its updated leadership website at http://leadership.ndp.ca. The site includes the full leadership rules, a detailed FAQ, and, once applications are approved, a list of leadership contestants. In the days ahead, the site will also feature a central events hub where Electoral District Associations, provincial and territorial sections, youth groups, and activists can share local events taking place during the leadership race.
The results of the leadership race will be announced in Winnipeg as part of the NDP’s national convention on March 29, 2026.
