Liberals letting billionaires off the hook yet again

NDP Critic for Tax Fairness and Inequality Niki Ashton issued the following statement:

“While families worry about affording their next meal, they’re seeing billionaires rack up record profits without paying their fair share. A Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) report revealed today that the ultra-wealthy avoided paying billions in taxes and Justin Trudeau’s Liberals helped them get away with it.

Families are forced to pay more for food, a roof over their heads and gas for their cars, but workers’ wages aren't keeping up with the rising cost of living. This inflation is being driven by the profits of the ultra-rich. Billionaires are getting even richer and they're able to avoid paying their taxes—robbing Canadians of critical investments in the social services they need.

In fact, just last week we learned that the Liberals collaborated with the big accounting firm KPMG to keep them off the hook for tax evasion. While hard-working people are struggling to get by, they watch in horror as their government caters to big businesses and billionaires profiteering off their backs.

Since the Liberals came to power seven years ago, they have allowed big corporations and billionaires off the hook when it comes to paying their taxes.

The Liberals promised to crack down on tax avoidance, but they still refuse to change the law. The CRA report shows that the government turns a blind eye to secretive offshore tax havens where the rich and powerful hide their money.

The NDP is fighting for workers and families—not billionaires and the most powerful. We will continue to pressure the government to change the law and end its special treatment of big corporations and billionaires by forcing them to pay their fair share and invest that money in services that families need now."
