NDP statement for Black History Month 2025
NDP leader Jagmeet Singh released the following statement:
“February is Black History Month, a time to honour the achievements, contributions and stories of Black Canadians who have fought to make Canada a better country, and build legacies for their families, communities and our nation.
The leadership of Black Canadians in political, economic, social, cultural and scientific arenas is being highlighted by this year’s Black History Month theme “Black Legacy and Leadership: Celebrating Canadian History and Uplifting Future Generations.” February is an opportunity for all Canadians to learn, to recognize that Black history is Canadian history, and to recommit to a more equitable future.
Black Canadians continue to face systemic barriers rooted in racism. Inequities and discrimination continue in housing, health care and employment. Black Canadians continue to be over-represented and inequitably treated in Canada’s justice system.
The rise in white supremacy, fueled by social media, is making Black Canadians less safe. From online bullying to hate crimes, all levels of government have a responsibility to tackle hate through concrete actions, not only words. New Democrats are committed to doing that work.”
